The Coat of Arms of the Municipality of Manaus

Approved by decree-law No. 17/November 1906, by Thaumaturgo Vaz.
- Upper part of coat of arms: The sun with the inscription "21 of November of 1889" is an allusion to the day that the former province adopted the Proclamation of the Republic.
- In the middle - The three illustrated sections dividing the shield have the following significance:
- First section - the drawing of two brigantines (the boat of that period), symbolizes the meeting of the waters of the Solimes and Negro Rivers, or the discovery of the Negro River by Francisco Orellano's expedition in the mid XV century.
- Second section - symbolizes the definitive founding of Manaus at the beginning of the XVII century.
- The Fortress and the Flag - at the top of the mast, represent rule, which was Portuguese at the time.
- The Straw Houses - on the opposite side represent the first city foundations.
- The Two Central Figures - according to legend, these two figures symbolize a peace agreement between the natives and the main city. This agreement resulted from the marriage between the daughter of a native chief and the military commander of the Portuguese guard.
- Larger Section - a section of the river, with the its gently sloping banks and in front of them a tree, a symbol of the agricultural and industrial nature of the region which transformed Manaus into a rubber trade boomtown during that period.
